Oualidia
(pronounced 'Wa-lid-ya') is situated on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. In former
times this part of the Barbary Coast was the scene of incursions by adventurers,
colonists and pirates; two rusty cannons in the garden bear witness to Oualidia’s
warlike past. Nowadays the main activities in the region are agriculture, fishing
and oyster cultivation. The town enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters
and warm summers. In the 1950s, King Mohammed V (grandfather of the present
king) built a palace on the beach – it is now a ruin overgrown with ivy
and araucaria trees. The town has one main street with shops, fruit market
and cafes, and a long winding road leading down to the lagoon with seafood
restaurants, a few small hotels and several villas.
