Three hours to the south, the blue and white port of Essaouira makes a fabulous
excursion. It can be done in a day but an overnight stay will make the visit
more memorable. Safi, 45 minutes from Oualidia, is the ceramic centre of Morocco.
You can visit the Colline des Poitiers and choose from a mind-boggling array
of pottery. Cap Bedouzza, between Safi and Oualidia, is a windswept promontory
with a curious light-house and miles of sandy beach. An hour to the north, the
old seaport of El Jadida boasts a cité portugaise with dilapidated churches,
ramparts and a 16th century underground cistern. Outside El Jadida is the Royal
Golf Sofitel, one of the best golf courses in Morocco. Another few kilometers
takes you to Azemmour, an old Portuguese colony with an ancient medina seldom
visited by tourists
